Eric Boulanger

Eric Boulanger

Eric Boulanger is a Grammy-winning mastering engineer, studio founder, and classically trained violinist whose exceptional range of skills has made him one of the most distinctive figures in contemporary audio. Owner and chief engineer of The Bakery — an audio and vinyl mastering studio in Los Angeles — Boulanger has worked with artists including Weezer, Green Day, Barbra Streisand, the Carpenters, and on the soundtrack to the film La La Land.

A Unique Path: From Juilliard to the Mastering Console
A classically trained violinist since the age of three, Boulanger trained at some of the world’s most prestigious institutions, including The Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, and Tanglewood. After exhausting the rigors of conservatory training, he transferred to Carnegie Mellon University, where he completed a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering — a technical foundation that would serve him powerfully in the world of audio mastering.
Eric’s professional career began when he became the first-ever intern in the history of Capitol Studios in Hollywood. There, he had the opportunity to work with Grammy-winning producer and engineer Al Schmitt, who became a pivotal mentor and guided him toward The Mastering Lab — the world’s first independent mastering studio, founded by legendary engineer Doug Sax.

Mastering Credits and Industry Milestones
Working behind the console, Eric has mastered Grammy-winning and nominated projects including work with Green Day, Hozier, Selena Gomez, Colbie Caillat, OneRepublic, Imagine Dragons, Neil Young, The Doors, Olivia Newton-John, Rufus Wainwright, and Sarah Jarosz, among many others.
In 2018, Eric won a Latin Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album, and also won as mastering engineer on Luis Miguel’s ¡México Por Siempre!, which took Album of the Year at the Latin Grammy Awards that same year.
Boulanger was also the first engineer to work on an iTunes “Mastered for iTunes” release — Colbie Caillat’s All of You — a landmark collaboration between Apple and NARAS to improve the quality of digitally downloaded music.

The Bakery and a Living Legacy
Eric founded The Bakery in 2015 on the Sony Pictures Lot in Culver City, carrying on the tradition of mentor Doug Sax. Over 200 million records have been pressed from The Bakery’s master lacquers, making its cutting system among the most celebrated in the world, with more records nominated for Engineering Grammys than any other studio.
Since 2011, Eric has served as a leader of the Producers & Engineers Wing of The Recording Academy, sitting on its Steering Committee.
A rare professional who moves fluidly between the concert stage and the mastering suite, Eric Boulanger brings musical depth, technical precision, and visionary studio design to every project he touches.
