Sylvia Massy

Sylvia Massy

Sylvia Massy is one of the most fearless and inventive record producers, engineers, and mixers in the history of rock music. Celebrated for her unconventional methods and bold sonic experimentation, she has built a legendary career working with some of the most iconic artists of the past four decades — from Tool and System of a Down to Johnny Cash, Prince, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Early Career and the Road to the Console
Massy’s path into music began in radio production at commercial houses in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she first developed a fascination with recording gear and studio technique. After working as a staff producer at Bear West Studios in San Francisco, she relocated to Los Angeles, where she landed a job at Tower Records on Sunset Boulevard — a move that would prove pivotal. It was there she connected with Green Jellö, recording their debut album and earning her first major production credit.
That album brought her into contact with the members of a then-unknown Los Angeles band called Tool, launching one of the most significant partnerships of her career. She went on to produce Tool’s Opiate and their triple-platinum debut full-length Undertow (1993), which became her major industry breakthrough.

Collaborations and Grammy-Winning Work
After becoming a staff engineer at Larrabee Sound in West Hollywood, Massy connected with legendary producer Rick Rubin, beginning a partnership that spanned seven years and produced some of the era’s most acclaimed recordings. Together they worked on projects including:

  • Johnny Cash — Unchained (Grammy Award: Best Country Album, 1997)
  • System of a Down — Self-titled debut album
  • Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Slayer, The Black Crowes, Danzig

Across the 1990s, Massy’s credits expanded to include an extraordinary range of artists: Aerosmith, Prince, Seal, R.E.M., Björk, Patti Smith, Sonic Youth, Foo Fighters, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins, Sevendust, Powerman 5000, Babyface, Paula Abdul, and Ryuichi Sakamoto, among many others.
RadioStar Studios and Experimental Spirit
In 2001, Massy acquired the historic Weed Palace Theater in Weed, California, transforming it into RadioStar Studios — an independent recording facility she operated for over a decade. The studio attracted a wide range of clients, including Sublime, Dishwalla, and Econoline Crush, and became a hub for adventurous, artist-driven recording.
Known for her willingness to push recording into unexpected territory, Massy has recorded bands in abandoned nuclear power plant cooling towers, underground salt mines, and churches with pipe organs — always in pursuit of sounds that conventional studios cannot provide. Her book, Recording Unhinged, documents her most unconventional techniques and has become an essential read for aspiring producers.

Educator, Author, and Industry Advocate
Massy is a dedicated educator who has taught at Berklee Online, authored courses on creative recording approaches, and spoken at major industry events. She is a passionate advocate for women in audio engineering and production, and has mentored a new generation of engineers through her work, her writing, and her ongoing participation in organizations like AES and Mix with the Masters.

A Legacy of Fearless Creativity
Across more than three decades behind the console, Sylvia Massy has defined what it means to be a truly original record maker. Her willingness to break rules, embrace the unexpected, and champion the artist’s vision at every stage has earned her an enduring place among the most respected and beloved figures in the history of music production.
