Sage Advice from GRAMMY Winners at Abbey Road Institute Los Angeles

Rafa has worked with artists including Camila Cabello, Alok, Stevie Wonder, Dr. Dre and Placido Domingo. John has worked with Linda Ronstadt, Little River Band and Don Henley.
I asked both Rafa and John three questions about their careers in the music industry and the essential skills they developed and refined over time that contributed to their success. Here is what they shared.
1. NAME ONE THING YOU HAVE LEARNED IS CRITICAL FOR SUCCESS AS AN AUDIO ENGINEER OR PRODUCER
Rafa Sardina: Once I had attained a certain level of proficiency, the most important thing I learned was that my personal demeanor and my attitude toward dealing with the artist and the record company were the most important skills I needed. By treating everyone with respect, I was able to have a sixty-year career.
John Boylan: The most important thing for a producer or engineer to learn is that the artist is the most indispensable element of the project and your role is to serve the best interests of the artist above all. Always keep in mind that you may be the leader, but the artist is the boss.
For both Rafa and John, the priority is always the artist and the record company. Their job is to leverage their skills and experience to deliver music that is both musically expressive and commercially viable, while maintaining professionalism, meeting deadlines and realizing the artist’s vision in a uniquely musical way.
2. NAME A SOFTWARE OR HARDWARE TOOL OR STUDIO TECHNIQUE YOU USE ON ALMOST EVERY PROJECT AND EXPLAIN WHY
Rafa Sardina: It is no secret that every aspiring engineer entering the industry today needs a high level of mastery in Pro Tools. Beyond that, it is valuable to have knowledge of other DAWs as well. I recommend Digital Performer and Wavelab Pro.
John Boylan: The most important software you will use is the Digital Audio Workstation. I believe you need to be qualified on at least two platforms, Pro Tools and one other of your choice. For me, that second platform is Digital Performer, which I find to be the most versatile for music creation due to its superior MIDI capabilities and flexible workflow options.
Not surprisingly, both Rafa and John emphasized the importance of deep understanding and fluency with a DAW and a mastering solution. As an engineer or producer, you must know your tools inside and out so that in the studio you are not thinking about the technology, but instead using it instinctively to record, mix and master with confidence and musical expression.
3. NAME ONE THING IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL CAREER THAT HAS BROUGHT YOU MORE WORK AS A PRODUCER OR ENGINEER
Rafa Sardina: I believe my ability to bring projects in on time and under budget is what consistently led to more work throughout my career. Paying attention to finances and organizing schedules carefully will always pay off.
John Boylan: There is no question in my mind that the reason I have had any success in this field is that I always brought projects in on time and under budget. If you do those two things consistently, word spreads and you will continue to get hired.
Rafa and John answered all three questions independently, yet their responses aligned clearly. Success as a producer or engineer requires strong musicianship, excellent listening and collaboration skills, deep knowledge of studio tools and a commitment to professionalism. Being organized, budgeting accurately and delivering on time are not optional skills. They are essential to building a sustainable and respected career in the music industry.
